consumerism

Sometimes the capitalism involved with religious holidays gets me kind of upset. I, for one, do not believe in any religion. Some people might think I am a piece of shit for this but I am not afraid of burning in hell. I go to church with my family on big Catholic holidays such as easter and Christmas but I only do this because I want to respect my parents.

Anyway, back to the capitalism/holiday relationship. Many Americans, especially adolescents and children coming of age are confused by the consumer excitement of holidays. When it is easter time (lent), one can walk into a grocery store, pharmacy, or any type of retail store, and become overwhelmed by a myriad of holiday goods. These goods can range from pastel-colored covered M & Ms to toy easter bunnies, and everything in between.

Americans easily become distracted by these goods and quickly forget about the true meaning of what the holiday really is. Children make the connection of easter to Bunnies and Eggs while adults might make the connection of easter to pastel colored-covered M & Ms. It is easy to forget that the real significance of Easter is Jesus' resurrection from the dead.

Unfortunately, many of the business men behind these holiday-consumer goods, use unfair business tactics to make their money. Some of them employ young children and treat them unfairly, by putting them in dangerous working conditions or paying them unfair wages.

At the end of the day, I am just another teenaged boy, thinking about the world around me. My voice is so faint that these problems will continue to get bigger and bigger and I will remain just as anonymous as I already am. Whatever, I guess.
